FMF PowerBomb Header Review

MotoObsession.com Product Review: FMF PowerBomb Header

The FMF PowerBomb product information says the following:

The redesigned PowerBomb is a four-stroke header that incorporates FMF’s patented PowerBomb module at a precise location in the initial stage of the header. By positioning this “Bomb” at a key point in the system, increased performance and flow is achieved through the expansion and contraction of exhaust sonics through the system. Result is a flow increase of nearly 10%! The outer chamber in the Powerbomb allows the air to expand, cool and ramp back up at a higher velocity. Additionally, the PowerBomb is a “pre-muffler” of sorts which helps to lower the bikes sound output by providing more sound absorbing surface area for the sound medium (exhaust gases). On some models, you can choose between a moto or supercross version. The supercross version is designed for more low to mid-range power where the moto version is focused in the mid to upper RPM range.

Fit:

The PowerBomb header fits perfectly.

Construction:

The PowerBomb header is available in stainless steel or titanium. The PowerBomb section is welded to the header tubing. The engine exhaust port flange is machined from billet aluminum.

Appearance:

This product is very good looking. The welds are very good and the finish is excellent. From the perspective of appearance, the PowerBomb header will not disappoint.

Performance:

I have been using the PowerBomb header on my 2010 KXF 450 in combination with the stock muffler. The KXF 450 already has plenty of power and torque, but I bought the PowerBomb because I broke the stock header. Honestly, I really haven't noticed much difference in engine performance. If my bike is making more horsepower, I do not notice it. Perhaps it would depend on the specific application. I did notice a pleasant change in the sound, however. The typical loud bark of the KXF is now a little softer and it seems that the throttle response is smoother.

Conclusion:

I did not buy the FMF PowerBomb header for improved performance, but rather because of a broken header. My current riding ability is limited enough that more power is not going to help me. Regardless, I love the PowerBomb header and do not hesitate to recommend it. It is a product with outstanding quality and fit. Just don't expect it to make miracles happen. It will, however, fit great, look good, hold up to abuse and may improve performance slightly.
